Its role is to support the industry through standards, education and technical resources. In simple terms, CAGI helps make compressed air performance easier to understand and compare.
“Customers should not have to make their compressed air decisions based on incomplete or inconsistent information,” said Charlie Laughlin, Head of Sales and Channel Development at ELGi North America at ELGi Industrial. “CAGI gives the industry a common language for performance, which helps customers to understand what the numbers really mean and make more informed decisions.”
Understanding CAGI data sheets
CAGI data sheets are standardized forms used to report performance information for compressed air equipment. They give the equipment manufacturers a common format for presenting data, which helps users evaluate equipment. In other words, they act as a comparison tool.
For compressors, CAGI data sheets include key performance details such as rated capacity, operating pressure, input power at zero flow, specific power and isentropic efficiency. These numbers not only help customers understand how much air a compressor can deliver, but also how much energy is required to deliver it. This can show whether two compressors that appear similar deliver air with the same level of efficiency.
Understanding the costs
A common misconception in compressed air is that the purchase price represents most of the cost. In reality, energy often accounts for the highest cost over the life of a compressed air system, which means small differences in performance can have a significant financial impact over time.
This is why structured performance information matters. If a compressor runs for thousands of hours every year, even small differences in efficiency add up. CAGI data sheets help customers see those differences more clearly. They also give customers the information needed to estimate energy costs and compare which compressor best meets the needs of the application.
“Energy use is one of the biggest factors in the total cost of a compressed air system,” Laughlin said. “People do not always see inefficiency right away, but it shows up over time. CAGI data helps customers look beyond the initial purchase price and think about what the system will cost to operate over its full lifecycle.”
Why performance verification matters
CAGI data sheets create a standard format. The CAGI Performance Verification Program goes a step further by helping validate published performance information, such as energy consumption, flow rate and efficiency, for some rotary compressor and refrigerated dryer products.
Manufacturers whose products pass the verification process can display the CAGI Performance Verification Seal on the relevant specification sheets and product literature. The seal matters because it publicly indicates that stated air flow capacities and efficiencies have been verified through an independent laboratory process, not only published by the manufacturer.
Since not every compressor manufacturer participates in the program, customers should look beyond general performance claims and ask whether the data is backed by a standardized verification process.

A manufacturing plant focused on uptime may need a system designed around reliability, backup capacity and responsive support.
This is why a consultative, engineering-first approach is important. Instead of only looking at which compressor has the lowest upfront cost or the strongest single performance figure, customers should look at what their system really needs.
Making better compressed air decisions
CAGI matters because it helps bring transparency to compressed air performance. For industrial customers, it makes it easier to compare products, ask better questions and understand the long-term impact of compressor selection.
Choosing the right compressor will never be as simple as picking the cheapest or the most expensive option. It comes down to the one that fits the system, supports the application and delivers dependable performance over time.
